Te Amo Nicaragua

Yessica was worried. She was pretty far along in her pregnancy, and everything had gone well, up to this point. But recently, uncharacteristic violence in the neighborhood related to Nicaragua’s current civil and political unrest have put stress on Yessica and her family. One morning she woke up with a headache and nausea, and while trying to do chores around the house she fainted and fell. Her first concern was the baby, but diagnostic services like ultrasounds are sometimes hard to access at her local public clinic, so her family loaded her up into a tricycle taxi and brought her to our new OneWorld Health Jinotega medical center to get a thorough check-up.

After an ultrasound, it was clear that the baby was just fine, but Yessica was diagnosed with pregnancy-induced hypertension, which is dangerous if left untreated. Today, after being prescribed a simple, low-cost medication, Yessica is doing just fine. She comes in every week for a free blood pressure check and a quick chat with our staff. She’s just a few more weeks away from giving birth to a little baby boy, and we can’t want for her to bring him in for us all to ooh and aah over.
