“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit…” (1 Corinthians 12:7-9)

This is my first mission trip to Nicaragua and my first with doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses and other health care providers.  As one with none of those skills I was curious how I would fit in.  Somehow I did.  Being married to a nurse and having many friends who work in the healthcare space meant I had a nominal understanding of how they delivered care.  But watching them work and delivering acts of healing, compassion, and love on the poorest of God’s children was amazing.  I got to be a part of their care and healing this week.

I turned 60 on this mission trip.  This morning as I look out over the Pacific Ocean on our “fun day” I am spending time reflecting on what God was trying to show me about this week.  What I saw is how the Holy Spirit is at work for the “common good”.  Seeing over 900 patients this week was “good”, spending time watching providers under trying circumstances deliver amazing care and compassion was “good”.  Seeing people come together for early morning devotions when many of us would rather catch a few more minutes of sleep was “good”.  But what I know for sure is that the God of the Universe loves all His children and only through the power of the Holy Spirit could He bring this group together to minister the poor, the lost, and the least this week.  Surely, this is the “common good” at its best.
